Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS), has updated its AppStream 2.0 tool to run desktop apps in a web browser. This update includes features for smaller companies and software vendors.
AWS customers can stream desktop apps to users via the service. This allows them to take advantage of AWS cloud resources as well as pay-as you-go pricing.
AppStream 2.0 allows you to provide instant access desktop applications from any web browser, on any device, streaming them from AWS. Gene Farrel, a company executive, stated this when AppStream 2.0 was introduced last December. You don’t have to rewrite your apps for the cloud and only need one version. AWS ensures that your applications and data are secure. The application stream is encrypted from end to end.
Jeff Barr, spokesperson for AWS, announced yesterday that AppStream 2.0 has been updated. This includes new features for small and medium-sized businesses, independent software vendors, and enterprises.
Barr stated that these features will enable customers to deploy, access, manage, and track applications more easily through AppStream.
New features include fleet auto scaling, which allows AppStream users scale their offerings according to demand changes as reported via CloudWatch metrics; image builders, for creating AppStream2.0 images featuring specific apps; SAML 2.0 authentication; fleet managing, which provides new options for controlling the instances running applications; CloudWatch metrics, which allow users to monitor things such as running capacity, in use capacity, and available capacity.
Barr also mentioned a Try It Now website where customers of AWS can test the service’s end-user experience using limited functionality. This site allows users to use applications such as Excel, Firefox and Word.
